*Responsibility comes from inside Photo by Ken LaRive
In this life, there seems to be three areas we are primarily responsible for, and if we don’t balance just one of these, all the rest can fall apart.
The first is your immediate life, that is, the world all around you including work, your home, the people you come in contact with, strangers, family and friends alike. If you are irresponsible, and that means not attempting to take control, to become accountable, you are indeed liable if anything goes wrong. For instance, leaving a sharp knife on the counter where a child could grab it, betraying someone’s trust, or not paying attention to the quality of your work might influence everything else in your life. If you do your best and something goes wrong, it may not be entirely your fault, but you are still responsible. This concept is not readily understood.
Secondly, you are responsible for all of the decisions you make. This might mean a decision not to go to the dentist, not fixing the old brakes on your car, and both might have negative effects... but far beyond that, what we do may have major repercussions that affect the world very broadly. Bringing a butane lighter in your carry-on luggage, throwing a lit cigarette out of your car window during a drought, or drinking and driving, can all have very dire reactions.
