دولة اليابان مكونة من عدة جزر عددها ( 4000 ) جزيرة على شكل أرخبيل طوله 3000 كم , أربعة منها رئيسية ( هونشو – شيكوكو – كيوشو – هوكايدو ) , وجزر اليابان مقسمة إدارياً من قبل الحكومة على 43 ولاية وأربعة بلديات , مساحتها الإجمالية 881,369 كيلو متر مربع .
ويبلغ إجمالي تعداد سكان اليابان حوالي 130 مليون نسمة , وهي بذلك تعتبر سابع دولة أكثر تعداداً بالسكان , عاصمتها طوكيو . ويشكل اليابانيون حوالي 99,4 % من السكان , والكوريون 0,5 % , وما تبقى وقدرة 0,1 % فهم من الجنسيات المختلفة .
ويعيش أكثر من 79 % من السكان في المدن الكبرى , والباقي في القرى والأرياف . يعمل 35% من السكان في الصناعة , بينما يعمل 27 % منهم في الزراعة , وهناك ما يقرب من 700 ألف صياد يعملون في مهنة صيد الأسماك . أما باقي السكان فيعملون في التجارة والمهن الحرة , وكموظفين في الدوائر الحكومية للدولة والمؤسسات الخاصة
